Overview

LaunchPad is a Chrome extension that replaces your new tab page with a dashboard of your own shortcuts. There is no LaunchPad account, there is no LaunchPad server, and there is no analytics or tracking of any kind.

What stays on your device

Everything you create in LaunchPad stays on your device: your shortcuts, groups, tasks, goals, notes, notebooks, saved sessions, tracked time, wallpapers and settings. It is kept in your browser's own storage and it is never sent to us. There is nowhere for it to be sent to - we do not run a server that could receive it, and we could not read your data even if we wanted to. One qualification, described in full below: if you use Chrome's own sync, Chrome carries your settings and your Pro licence key between your machines for you.

What does leave your device

A few things do travel, and it is worth being precise about them. Each one is a request your browser makes so it can show you something or check something. None of them sends a copy of your data anywhere, and none of them is stored by us.

Website icons. To show the small icon on a shortcut, your browser asks Google's public favicon service at www.google.com for that site's icon. Google receives the site's domain - github.com, say - and nothing else: not the full address, not the rest of your browsing, not anything identifying you. For eight Google products - Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Calendar, Ads and Meet - LaunchPad asks for Google's own published icon file instead, from ssl.gstatic.com, fonts.gstatic.com, calendar.google.com or ads.google.com. Those are ordinary requests for a picture, the same as the one above. If you set your own picture on a shortcut, it is kept on your device and no request is made at all.

Wallpapers. If you choose a wallpaper from the built-in gallery, your browser downloads that photograph from Unsplash, at images.unsplash.com, exactly as it would download an image on any web page. Unsplash receives a request for a picture and nothing about you. A wallpaper you upload yourself never leaves your device.

Searches. When you search from the LaunchPad search bar, your browser hands the query to whichever search engine you have set as your default in Chrome. It goes from your browser straight to that search engine. LaunchPad does not see it, does not store it, and keeps no record that you searched.

A Pro subscription. If you buy Pro, a licence key is sent to our payment provider so your subscription can be checked. That is described in full in the next section.

Chrome sync. If you are signed in to Chrome and have sync turned on, your LaunchPad settings and your Pro licence key travel between your own computers the same way your bookmarks do. Chrome carries them to your Google account; they do not come to us, and we could not read them. What travels is your preferences - icon size, text size, layout, focus view, search mode, the Pomodoro and focus settings, the wallpaper dimming and whether wallpaper rotation is on - and your licence key, so that installing LaunchPad on a second computer gives you your setup and your Pro access back without setting anything up again. What does not travel: your shortcuts, groups, tasks, goals, notes, notebooks, saved sessions, tracked time, and any wallpaper image you uploaded or chose. This is governed by Chrome's own sync setting, not by a setting in LaunchPad - if Chrome sync is off, or you are not signed in to Chrome, nothing is carried anywhere.

Pro subscriptions and Dodo Payments

LaunchPad Pro is a paid subscription. Payments and licences are handled for us by Dodo Payments, who act as the merchant of record - they are the company you actually buy from, and they take and hold the payment.

Paying. When you start a purchase, LaunchPad opens Dodo's own checkout page, at checkout.dodopayments.com, in a new tab. From that moment you are on Dodo's website, and what happens there is covered by Dodo's privacy policy rather than this one. Your card details are typed into Dodo's page and go to Dodo. They never pass through LaunchPad, and LaunchPad never sees or stores them. When the payment succeeds, Dodo returns you to a page on mylaunchpad.me carrying your new licence key, and LaunchPad picks it up from there so Pro switches on without you having to copy anything by hand.

Checking that a subscription is still running. Your licence key is stored on your device. So that Pro knows whether your subscription is still active, LaunchPad sends that key to Dodo's licence service at live.dodopayments.com at three moments, and the full contents of each message are listed here:

When you first activate a licence on a device, LaunchPad sends the licence key and a short device label it builds from your operating system - "LaunchPad on Windows", or Mac, Linux, ChromeOS or Android. That label is the name of the operating system family and nothing more. It is not your computer's name, not a serial number, and not anything that identifies you or singles out your machine.

On a routine re-check, LaunchPad sends the licence key and nothing else. This happens at most once every six hours, and only while your browser is running.

If you remove a licence from a device, LaunchPad sends the licence key and the identifier Dodo issued when that device was activated, so that Dodo can free the slot for you to use elsewhere.

If you would like to check that against the code, LaunchPad is open source. Those three messages are the only ones it ever sends to Dodo, they are sent from license.js, and the only named values in them are license_key, name (the operating-system label above) and license_key_instance_id.

What is never sent to Dodo. None of your shortcuts, groups, tasks, goals, notes, notebooks, saved sessions, tracked time, browsing history, searches or settings. Across the whole life of a subscription, Dodo receives a licence key, and once, a word naming your operating system. Nothing else from inside LaunchPad ever reaches them.

What Dodo does with your payment details is set out in Dodo Payments' own privacy policy.

If you never buy Pro, none of this happens. LaunchPad contacts Dodo only on behalf of someone who has a licence key.

Permissions

LaunchPad asks for the following browser permissions, each for one job:

storage: keeps your shortcuts, groups, tasks, goals, notes, tracked time and settings on this device.

bookmarks: lets you import your existing Chrome bookmarks into LaunchPad.

contextMenus: provides the right-click "Add to LaunchPad" command, and clipping a selection to a note.

history: powers the browsing-history panel on your new tab page.

topSites: powers the "Import Top Sites" button, which adds your most visited sites as a group. It runs only when you click it.

tabs: powers saving and restoring sets of tabs, and opening a whole group at once.

search: sends what you type in the search bar to your own default search engine.

webNavigation: powers Focus Blocking, so LaunchPad can turn you away from sites you have chosen to block during a focus session.

alarms: schedules focus timers, reminders and routine housekeeping.

idle: notices when you are away from the keyboard, so time you were not there is never counted as focused time.

offscreen: plays the focus chime when no LaunchPad tab is open.

sidePanel: shows LaunchPad in Chrome's side panel.

Two more are optional, are off unless you turn them on, and can be withdrawn at any time in Chrome's settings:

notifications: desktop alerts for focus sessions and due reminders.

downloads: saves a backup file to your computer when you ask for one.

Chrome also asks you to allow LaunchPad to reach two addresses: live.dodopayments.com, for the licence checks described above, and mylaunchpad.me, so LaunchPad can recognise the page you are returned to after a purchase and pick up your licence key from it.

Tracking

There are no cookies, no pixels, no fingerprinting, no advertising and no analytics. LaunchPad does not count how many times you open it, does not record which features you use, and has no way of knowing who you are.

Account

No account and no sign-in are needed to use LaunchPad. Pro is attached to a licence key rather than to an account, so we hold no email address and no password for you. Dodo holds whatever details you gave them when you paid.

Data sharing

We do not sell, trade, rent or share your data with anyone. We do not hold any of it to share.

Children's Privacy

LaunchPad does not knowingly collect any data from children under the age of 13. Since LaunchPad does not collect personal data from any user, no special provisions are necessary.

Changes to This Policy

If we update this privacy policy, we will post the revised version on this page with an updated date. Continued use of LaunchPad after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
